Tasting note
Just as Pinot Noir and Cinsaut brought their unique characteristics to the crossing of Pinotage, so is their contribution in No.42. While Pinotage was primarily responsible for the structure and vivid oak notes, Pinot Noir and Cinsaut contributed elegance and Old World sensibility. Ripe plum and cherry fruit on the nose with a hint of roasted oak. The palate is silky and elegant, and the finish is supported by a velvety tannin structure and modern oak aromas.
Culinary recommendation
It goes fantastically with braised beef cheeks with confit root vegetables and a creamy polenta.
Vinification
Orpheus and the Raven No.42 celebrates the heritage of Pinotage and its parent varieties. One of the biggest challenges when creating the 42er was finding vineyards that would produce the glorious whole that we imagined when all the components were brought together. As a result, grapes were purchased from vineyards in Walker Bay, Bottellary Hills and Durbanville. The grapes were sorted, pressed and vinified in a combination of open cement and closed stainless steel fermenters. After malolactic fermentation, the components were aged separately in oak barrels (30% new ones) for 18 months. The Pinotage component was aged in a combination of French and American oak, while the Cinsaut and Pinot Noir matured exclusively in French oak.
