Tasting note
Dense, rich plum, ruby red. Fantastic intensity! Wonderful, seductive scent of plums, red and black berries, almonds and coffee with toffee, as well as classic pencil chips, cigar boxes and cassis. Elegance that fills your mouth, with a cashmere feel of finely woven tannins galore. First, it presents a complicated, intertwined, sweeter, dark berry fruit. A fine balance of acidity and minerality helps to harness youthfulness.
Culinary recommendation
Great with a leg of lamb with mint salsa, a grilled prime rib or braised tomatoes with eggplant and porcini mushrooms.
Vinification
The grapes come from carefully selected clone material from vineyards with a variety of soils, from deeply decomposed granite to rocky decomposed Table Mountain sandstone. The vines, which vary in age from 10 to 22 years, produced unadulterated fruit. As usual, the assemblage was carried out in consultation with Pierre Lurton and winemaker Henry Kotzé: “This is a Morgenster Reserve, so expect nothing less than amazing. These wines are made from the Schapenberg slopes to create memories from today to 20 years from now,” he says. The wine is aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels.
