Tasting note
The 2022 Grenache Noir starts with a floral and red-fruity bouquet that contains notes of raspberries and dusty plums with a wonderful floral touch of whole grapes. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, juicy and fresh, with persistent tannins, before a gentle herbal flavor creeps into the long, red-fruity finish. There is a hint of reduction in the aftertaste.
Culinary recommendation
Excellent wine with an onion and apple tart with thyme and gruyere.
Vinification
The 2022 vintage consists of five Grenache Noir vineyards, with a focus on a vineyard from the Paardeberg that was planted in the early 2000s. This vineyard is joined by another Paardeberg vineyard, which was recently planted on the northeast side of the Langkloof Valley with a view of the Aprilskloof. Another addition is a vineyard built in 2016 on Kasteelberg slate. This vineyard was planted high up on the mountain as terraces. Finally, a vineyard from a farm north of Malmesbury, which we have been working with since 2012, was also added. Twelve different batches were harvested from the five different Grenache Noir vineyards. Some (45%) of the wine was fermented and aged in concrete. The juice was left on the skins four weeks before and during fermentation. During fermentation, the juice was left on the skins for four weeks and 60% whole grapes were used. The grapes were pressed in during alcoholic fermentation and pumped around in order to achieve minimal and gentle extraction. The wine was pressed and aged in old 500L oak barrels from France and in 2 700-liter concrete containers.
