Tasting note
The Wenzlau Chardonnay is bright golden yellow. The nose is dominated by aromas of apple, peach, mandarin, peppermint, white flowers and wet stone. On the palate, the wine is complex and fresh with lots of substance and power, a mineral saltiness, a vibrating acid structure and slight phenolic accents. A wine that beautifully reflects the rugged terroir of this Santa Rita Hills location. An intensely mineral Chardonnay for connoisseurs!
Culinary recommendation
Goes well with poultry and veal with cream sauce, marine fish, crustaceans, vegetarian dishes.
Vinification
The Chardonnay grapes come from the very steep “Wenzlau Vineyard”, opposite the famous “Sanford & Benedict” location, across the Santa Ynez River. The vines there are rooted on loamy soils and are all cultivated according to organic guidelines. After manual harvesting, spontaneous fermentation and aging of approx. 11 months take place in French 228 liter, 350 liter and 500 liter oak barrels with approx. 20% new wood content. The wine is then aged in steel tanks for a further 5 months before being bottled.
