About the wine
Valtellina is the largest terraced mountain wine-growing region in Italy. The native variety cultivated is Nebbiolo, locally known as Chiavennasca. The vine is produced at an altitude of between 350 and 900 m above sea level. “Ronco del Picchio” is made from Nebbiolo grapes from a 2.5 hectare vineyard in San Gervasio at an altitude of 750 meters. The height of the vineyard is one of the reasons why it was chosen by Fay to produce this wine, which requires a tendency to dry in boxes around three months after the harvest. The 12-month aging in barriques completes the cellar process to present us with this wine of great depth and character, in which the undisputed power is never built without elegance. Sandro Fay is very small and produces outstanding filigree, classic and complex wines, which impressively reflect the special altitude and the unique silty, sandy terroir around the town of Valgella. The “Sotcastèl” wine expresses the minerality and freshness typical of the Alpine region.
