Tasting note
Francesco Monchiero is the first to receive the coveted Tre Bicchieri with a wine from the appellation, Arneis Roero - and also the first to receive them twice in a row. Francesco Monchiero grew up here and is more familiar with the region than anyone else. He knows every rock, but above all the characteristics of the very different locations on the Roero Hills. A tour of its vines is also a lesson about the geology of this region. He occasionally picks up a mussel that came to the surface as a result of soil work, under which it was deposited millions of years ago, when the area was still occupied by the sea. His Arneis Roero Recit (recit means “piccolo re”, little king in Piedmontese dialect) - this is how Francesco Monchiero classifies the Arneis variety among Italian white wines, shows a diverse, delicately spicy bouquet reminiscent of wild berries and mint. On the palate, smooth sweetness and lively, fine acidity balance.
Culinary recommendation
The wine should be enjoyed during this period: Until 2020. Flaschenpöstler recommends this Roero Arneis Recit DOCG for fried chicken and tapas dishes.
Vinification
A few words about vinification: Francesco Monchiero has revived his family's somewhat sleepy but traditional winery, and the general renaissance that Arneis has experienced over the past 15 years has been very helpful to him. With professionalism and passion, Francesco has succeeded in setting up a modern business and producing excellent red wines as well as top-class arneis. He only uses grapes from his own vineyards spread over the entire municipality of Canale (capital of Roero). The pressing is very gentle, which means that fermentation takes place very slowly at a low temperature in order to preserve the maximum of the varietal aromas and their own refreshing effect.
