Tasting note
This intense ruby red Douro wine impresses with complex and intense aromas of ripe plums, black cherries and dark berries accompanied by pleasantly spicy notes of chocolate, exotic spices and some cedarwood. On the palate, it is voluminous with dark fruit and an extremely spicy taste. The pleasant freshness and velvety tannins result in a long-lasting aftertaste carried by fruit. A classic Douro wine with tremendous fun potential.
Culinary recommendation
Goes well with Portuguese specialities, hearty meat dishes, stews, lamb, grilled meat, recent hard cheeses.
Vinification
The grapes for Vinhas Velhas come from ancient vines around the old and now newly renovated Quinta Dona Mafalda. After manual harvesting, the grapes are spontaneously fermented and aged in French barriques for about 12 months before the wine ages in the bottle for a further 12 months. With the first vintage of 2013, oenologist Marisa Ribeiro only pressed 4000 bottles.
