About the wine

If we can offer something special for Christmas 2021, it's this outstanding Sangiovese 2016 Poggetto Di Sopra DOCG. Blooming and fertile Tuscan landscapes give us these grapes, from which the winemaker from the Italian winery Avignonesi conjures up this red wine with refinement and experience. Flaschenpöstler culinary tip: This Sangiovese is excellent to serve with lamb or beef.

Tasting note
The wine shimmers garnet red in the glass. Aromas of knubble cherries, blueberries and red plums, which are underlaid with hints of violets, undergrowth, sage and thyme, caress the nose. But the true potential of this Vino Nobile is revealed on the palate! Dense, fine-meshed, with silky tannins and an incredibly precise and delicate structure, the wine glides across the tongue. In addition, there is the warm character and the almost ethereal minerals, which are accompanied by subtle oak notes and a touch of licorice root, which also initiate the minute-long finish.
Culinary recommendation
Goes well with leg of lamb with Mediterranean herbs. Stuffed and grilled oxheart tomatoes are a delicious choice — as are aged cheeses.
Vinification
The Avignonesi Poggetto di Sopra Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2016 is made from 100% Sangiovese. The grapes come exclusively from the Poggetto di Sopra vineyards of the six Salcheto, Poliziano, La Braccesca, Dei, Boscarelli and Avignonesi wineries. After manual harvesting, the grapes were spontaneously fermented in the Avignonesi cellar. The grapes remained intact and only burst open as a result of fermentation so that they could then be mashed. This in turn resulted in slow fermentation, which took about a month. The wine was then aged for 24 months in oak barrels (75% small barrels, 25% large barrels).
