Exploring the diversity of Syrah grown in the Cape's cool microclimates is my passion, and this label is another step in my relentless search for the best locations in the Winelands. I work closely with farmers who share my passion for Syrah and precision viticulture. The idea is to provide a snapshot of Cape Syrah in a specific year and combine the results in one bottle. In other words: Connect The Dots. This vintage was fermented from 100% whole grapes and gently basket-pressed in older 300-liter French oak barrels for 10 months before aging in the bottle for a further 12 months. The blend consists of three parts of almost equal size, with the Helderberg producing red fruits and flowers, underpinned by grippy graphite and textured tannin, while the soils of the Elgin plots have a more luxurious, plum-like profile. The slate soil has a slight lavender and pepper note, the sandstone a darker, spicier note. Taken together, they show how well Syrah thrives in South Africa's cooler Cape climate.
