About the wine

Grifi is a remarkable wine made from two late-ripening grape varieties — one Italian and one French. The combination of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon provides a balanced mix of freshness and depth. Sangiovese from the vineyards around Montepulciano brings in an elegant, spicy aroma, while the Cabernet Sauvignon from Cortona and Montepulciano gives the wine powerful tannins and structure. To ensure the ideal combination of both varieties, the grapes are harvested at the same time and fermented together.

Tasting note
In their time, i.e. at the beginning of the eighties to the mid-nineties, the Falvo brothers had pressed a wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Prugnolo Gentile, the local Sangiovese clone that originally formed the basis of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Grifi, (named after the mythical Etruscan animal) was even one of the first innovative Tuscan wines that aged in barriques, resulting in an entire generation of new wines. The new owner of Azienda Avignonesi, Valérie Saverys, continues this tradition and once again presents the Grifi as imagined by the Falvo brothers back then, but with a little more Toscanità, with Sangiovese and no longer Cabernet Sauvignon taking on the lead role. Together, this results in a powerful yet elegant, precisely defined blend with finely integrated tannins.
