Tasting note
Only the best plots of this already small winery were selected for the production of Syrah. Due to Covid, the bottling of this vintage was delayed and the wine spent 24 months in barrel, compared to the usual 14-month barrel aging for this wine. The careful selection and additional barrel aging resulted in a wine of exceptional depth and complexity. The intense blackberry fruit is complemented by cigar and coffee aromas as well as by distinctive nut and anise aromas. On the palate, it is quite reserved with finesse on the finish.
Culinary recommendation
The full-bodied character of this red wine goes perfectly with rich, tasty dishes, grilled food (including grilled vegetables), game dishes (especially with steamed fruit and sweet aromatic spices), peppercorn-crusted steaks and grilled meat in a sweet sauce. The abundant fruits of red wine also pick up on the sweetness in jellies, chutneys and berry sauces.
Vinification
The Syrah vineyards of the La Motte winery are between 10 and 30 years old and are spread over various blocks with different soil profiles. The vineyard blocks are located between 200 and 300 meters above sea level. The soil is sandstone and granite and varies from a heavier texture along the slopes to a sandy, well-drained texture where the landscape is flatter. All vineyards have trellises. Different clones and microclimates on the estate give the wine different characteristics. The grapes were harvested when ripe. They were refrigerated overnight before they were 100% destemmed and the whole berries were placed in stainless steel tanks. Selected yeasts were added immediately and fermentation took place at 24 to 28 degrees Celsius. The tanks were pumped around twice a day with good ventilation. To promote elegance and soft extraction, the mash was pressed before fermentation was complete. The wine was aged for 24 months in 300-liter French oak barrels, 30% of which were new.
