Tasting note
The Helderberg area in Stellenbosch is known for producing some of the best Cabernet Sauvignons in South Africa. The 2022 vintage of La Motte is a complex wine that combines intense berry and plum fruits with cloves and mint. Expect typical Cabernet-Sauvignon features such as a cigar box and oak toffee in the background. Abundant tannins and a full palate with an opulent consistency and a persistent finish suggest exceptional aging potential.
Culinary recommendation
Thanks to its distinct minerality, firm tannins, and flavor intensity, this Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural partner for beef, while it goes well with almost any other meat — slow-roasted lamb, pork, game meat, marinated rib-eye steak, braised short ribs and even mushroom stroganoff. It also goes well with vegetarian treats, such as simple vegetable tarts.
Vinification
All grapes grow on trellises and are located on Helderberg, about 7 km from the False Bay coast. The floor is a combination of weathered granite and slate with some stains of gravel. The soil is well-drained and has a good water storage capacity. Sustainable farming methods include vine roof maintenance in the vineyards to ensure good ventilation and sufficient light. The stalking and sorting take place during harvesting in the vineyard. The grapes fermented in stainless steel tanks, pumped twice a day. The barrels were pressed and filled three weeks later. The wine aged in 300-liter French oak barrels for 16 months - 100% second filling. The various batches of Cabernet Sauvignon were blended and filtered before being bottled in October 2022.
