About the wine

Christmas 2018 is just around the corner! Make the most of it with this distinctive Pinotage 2017 — Cap Maritime Pinot Noir. The winemaker from the South African winery Boekenhoutskloof grows this wine in the countryside. Flaschenpöstler culinary tip: This Pinotage is ideal to serve with pasta bolognese or strong cheese platters.

Tasting note
The nose is profound with intense aromas of ripe berries and cloves. The spicy fruit aromas on the nose follow a peppery palate with aromas of sour cherries, cranberries, fresh plums and licorice. The wine has a light to medium body with fine integrated tannins, the lively acidity provides a dry finish with notes of chocolate and tobacco.
Culinary recommendation
Nice Pinot Noir that you like to drink with a quiche or meat tart.
Vinification
The production of Cap Maritime wines began with the 2017 vintage. They worked with vineyards from the upper Hemel en Aarde valley, but unfortunately production from this area was discontinued. The search for alternatives began and they found what they were looking for in Upper Hemel en Aarde Valley in 2019. The property is located 4 km from the sea on the northwestern side of the valley with views of the hills and the Bot River Lagoon. The 2021 vintage opened up the prospect of working with plots from Overberg and Hemel en Aarde Ridge. On this occasion, the blend of these two apellations was classified as WO Cape South Coast, and the coastal wines were born. With these wines, winemaker Gottfried Mocke tries to bring youthful accessibility while remaining true to the style of the house. His preference for accentuating texture and perfume characters is a trademark of his wines. The grapes for Pinot Noir were picked by hand and sorted into small boxes before being transported to the winery in Franschhoek. Careful triage took place there so that only healthy grapes reach the fermentation tanks. The majority of the grapes were destemmed, leaving a share of around 25% of whole grapes. After spontaneous fermentation, the wine aged in French oak barrels for a further 12 months.
