Tasting note
The Chardonnay has a straw yellow color in the glass and opens up inviting aromas of fresh lime, apple blossoms and honeydew melon, with soft hints of lemongrass and chalk. The rich citrus character on the nose continues on a soft, creamy palate with aromas of quince, green apple and pickled lemon. The wine has a medium structure with beautifully integrated oak wood nuances, which result in an elegance and balance. Grapefruit and lemon verbena remain in a pure, clean finish.
Culinary recommendation
Accompaniment to spaghetti with yoghurt-mint pesto, coconut-lime fish curry or fruity endive salad.
Vinification
The production of Cap Maritime wines began with the 2017 vintage. They worked with vineyards from the upper Hemel en Aarde valley, but unfortunately production from this area was discontinued. The search for alternatives began and they found what they were looking for in Upper Hemel en Aarde Valley in 2019. The property is located 4 km from the sea on the northwestern side of the valley with views of the hills and the Bot River Lagoon. The 2021 vintage opened up the prospect of working with plots from Overberg and Hemel en Aarde Ridge. On this occasion, the blend of these two apellations was classified as WO Cape South Coast, and the coastal wines were born. With these wines, winemaker Gottfried Mocke tries to bring youthful accessibility while remaining true to the style of the house. His preference for accentuating texture and perfume characters is a trademark of his wines. The grapes for Chardonnay were picked by hand and sorted into small boxes before being transported to the winery in Franchhoek. Careful triage took place there so that only healthy grapes were pressed. The must settled in the tank for two days before it was spontaneously fermented in 20% new French barriques, 50% older barriques and 30% in concrete tanks. After fermentation, the wine aged for a further 12 months with a light battonage on the lees.
