Both Syrah and Chenin Blanc are grown on our beautiful Swartland property, Goldmine Farm. The property is located on Riebeeksrivier Road, between Riebeek-Kasteel and Malmesbury, and is located on the southwestern slopes of Kasteelberg. The soil types on gold mines include brown slate, blue slate, quartz together with deposits of Table Mountain sandstone (weathered and washed from Kasteelberg). The bedrock consists of deep slate. Our experience with the gold mine and its soils results in concentrated yet fine and well-structured wines. The name Patina is derived from its origin. It refers to the gold seekers with their mine pans and the patina that has formed on their equipment over time. The grapes for our Patina Chenin Blanc come from a single location on our Goldmine Estate, which grew on slate and decomposed dolomitic granite. The Chenin has a particular affinity for the warm, Mediterranean terroir along the Riebeeks River at the foothills of the Kasteelberg in the Swartland region. The cooler night temperatures without long-lasting heat waves during the day ensured an excellent range of days and favourable ripening conditions. The grapes were harvested using optimal natural analyses that reflect uniform ripening. A third of the grapes were fermented spontaneously in concrete eggs, while the second component was pressed as a whole grape and then aged in French barriques and concrete eggs for 12 months. The third component was fermented on the skins and pressed halfway through fermentation and then transferred to our Nomblot concrete eggs.
