About the wine
The ancestors of the Fontana family began cultivating vines in the hills around Castiglione Falletto, the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, over 400 years ago. The family's current winery was built in 1820 and is run by Livia and her children Michele and Lorenzo. Livia took over the winery from her father, which was unusual. She confidently renamed it from “Ettore Fontana” to “Livia Fontana.” The family is characterized by extraordinary foresight: As early as the 1960s, Ettore supplied its customers in Switzerland with its delivery van, a tradition that is still lived on today.

Tasting note
In my nose, I weave floral lightness with spice fineness: violet blossoms, a touch of rose petal, cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate, I am supple and fresh, with a tannin that starts out powerful but then turns into elegance. My finale is long, delicate and balsamic — a Barolo who doesn't speak loudly but precisely.
Culinary recommendation
I go well with complex, intensive dishes. I let a slow-cooked roast lamb blossom, but a roasted duck or game also goes wonderfully with me. My freshness keeps the dishes lively, my structure gives them depth.
Vinification
I grow in the historic Cru Villero in Castiglione Falletto in Barolo. My soil consists of blue-white marl, rich in minerals, and stores water even in dry years. This is how I develop structure and durability. My tannins are clear and precise, yet always elegant — combined with finesse and typical Barolo texture. After hand harvesting, I ferment gently before aging in large oak barrels for about 32 months. I produce just under 6500 bottles a year.
