Winegrowing in Höngg has a tradition that is measured not in decades, but in millennia. Finds from antiquity suggest that the Romans were already tending vines here. In 1869, Höngg was the third largest vineyard community in the canton of Zurich. After the raging of phylloxera, the vineyard area sank to a few hectares, which were finally completely cleared during the war. In 1969, the city rebuilt the striking Chillesteig vineyard below the Höngg church. It was the culmination of a project in which Heinrich Zweifel (1904 — 1987) was significantly involved for twelve years.
