About the wine

The municipality of Olmedillo de Roa occupies a special position in the Ribera del Duero growing area: Thanks to the slightly elevated position, the grapes here suffer less from the heat, which makes the wines fresher and less luscious. It's no wonder that star winemaker Peter Sisseck purchased the grapes for his legendary PINGUS (Spain's most expensive wine) for many years, including from the more than 80-year-old vineyards owned by José Luis Escudero and César Martin. A few years ago, the two enthusiasts founded their own winery under the name Pagos de Matanegra and pressed their great grapes themselves — with resounding success: The Matanegra Vendimia Selecionada 2009 was named the best new Spaniard by the trade magazine “Hotelier” with a dream grade of 19.2!

Tasting note
Purple with garnet reflections and high color density. On the nose, strong aromas of ripe forest fruits stand out, which are accompanied by notes of dried plum. As the wine progresses and after the wine has breathed a bit, balsamic notes develop with slight undergrowth aromas and a touch of leather. On the palate, the Matanegra Crianza is powerful and fleshy, dense and rich in extracts. Well-incorporated alcohol with very round tannins. Thanks to the pleasant acidity, the wine does not appear heavy, but rather light and tasty. The finish is particularly long, very pleasant and fruity.
