About the wine

The winemaker from the South African winery Gabrielskloof has absolutely mastered his craft. Elegance and finesse are the characteristics of this white wine, which originates in the sunny and enchanting landscape of the Coastal region. There is always something left over from Christmas dinner. Do you know that? Why not invite your friends over for a glass of wine in the afternoon to enjoy the festive meal again and we recommend this distinctive Sauvignon Blanc 2016 — Magdalena. Culinary tip from Flaschenpöstler: This Sauvignon Blanc is ideal to serve with goat cheese or mussels.

Tasting note
Floral notes, quince and pea shoots add to the aromas, followed by light honey and basil. On the palate, a texture of dried Grannysmith apples, on the middle palate with nougat and salted macadamia nuts - and a touch of yellow fruit and hay. The latter notes will certainly develop over time in the bottle, but the wine has a freshness and precision in its youth, just as it is.
Culinary recommendation
This vintage from Magdalena is delicious and goes well with simpler dishes - such as gazpacho with white almonds and rolled labneh in flatbread.
Vinification
The Sémillon comes from old, low-yield vines from Franschhoek, which are estimated to be 40 years old, giving it a textural dimension that is only possible with vineyards of this age. The Sauvignon Blanc comes from Gabriëlskloof, where the vines are 14 years old and lie on south-facing slopes with a combination of table mountain sandstone and Bokkeveld slate soils. The cool marine climate naturally results in lower yields — typically six tons per hectare. Both the Sémillon and the Sauvignon Blanc were fermented and aged in 400 and 500 liter old French oak barrels and produced oxidatively (whole grape pressed) with minimal intervention (natural fermentation). Both wines spent around ten months on the lees before they were cut and bottled.
