Tasting note
The intense ruby red Castelinho Reserva has strong aromas of dark berries, blueberry jam, ripe plums, dried fruit, some violets and a touch of chocolate on the nose. On the palate, the velvety structure impresses with lots of dark fruit and a pleasant spiciness. Gentle tannins and well-integrated acidity result in a long fruit-borne finish. A classic Douro wine with lots of density, substance and a sensational price/pleasure ratio.
Culinary recommendation
Wonderful with barbecues, Portuguese specialities, pasta dishes, hearty meat dishes such as game, recent hard cheeses
Vinification
The grapes for the Reserva come from the oldest vineyards in Castelinho and are all harvested by hand. The grapes are cold-fermented together after squid maceration. Approximately 30% of the wine is then aged in French oak wood for 6 months. The rest matures in steel tanks before the assemblage takes place and the Reserva is left in the bottle for a further months.
