Tasting note
The wine reveals a distinctive aromatic intensity with a fruity profile that highlights notes of wild blackberries, cherries and black plums. The typical violet notes, which are characteristic of the queen of Portuguese grapes, give the wine elegance. Ageing in oak barrels adds complexity and brings with it aromas of cloves and black pepper, which enrich the aromatic character of the wine. On the palate, the wine is dry and well-balanced, with firm and present tannins. The body is medium-strong, but the acidity brings freshness, which invigorates the palate and keeps the wine dynamic. The intensity is pronounced, with distinct fruit and oak notes in the background, which add depth and complexity. The aftertaste is long and lively and provides a lasting and satisfying feeling.
Vinification
Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at 28°C. Pumping was carried out daily to extract just the right amount of colour, tannin and structure without obscuring the elegance of the fruit. After fermentation, the wine was transferred to 500-liter French oak barrels for aging. 65% of the wine aged in oak barrels (85% used, 15% new) for 12 months, while the remaining 35% rested in stainless steel tanks to preserve their freshness. All barrels were made from French oak. The year 2023 was hot and humid, with temperatures consistently above average until August. There was plenty of rainfall, particularly in December 2022 and in June, which lasted until harvest and made harvesting difficult. In order to balance strength and finesse, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz were hand-picked at optimal maturity.
