Weisser Burgunder Réserve 2020 - Weingut Knewitz

Like all sites around Appenheim, the Eselpfad location has massive limestone in the subsoil, but the surface here is a bit fatter with loess and clay, which is where Weissburgunder feels particularly at home. Old vines only produce small berries, which are blessed with strength and structure. On the nose, with dense spiciness, some sesame and ginger, plus ripe mango and orange, intense and complex, reminds me something of many wines from the Jura. Despite the powerful nose on the palate, slim and with juicy acidity, the limestone bottom also hits through again, crumbly structure, with a little orange zest and bacon pear, ripe melon and also herbs and a little sage at the finish. A great Weissburgunder that retains its finesse even in the warm 2015 vintage.
