About the wine

One kilometer from the town of Estremoz is the “Quinta do Carmo” from the 18th century, which has become a much-visited tourist attraction not only because of its beauty but also because of its history and the quality of the wines. The “Quinta” is the most beautiful house in the region and still contains features of Baroque architecture. The story tells us that one day the house was a gift from King João V to a lady of the court. Dona Maria, with whom he was madly in love, gave the wine produced here the name. Historical documents that are more than 130 years old show that Quinta do Carmo has always produced wine. But it was only since 1988, when the current owner Júlio Tassara Bastos began selling nationally and internationally, that he gained widespread recognition. After Julio Bastos broke away from the partnership with Château Lafite, he launched his own project under the name Dona Maria. He had the old property renovated and equipped it with the latest and best technology.

Tasting note
Thomas Vaterlaus, Vinum: “Ripe, extremely complex aromas with red berries, garrique herbs, mint and leather. Extremely powerful on the palate, with powerful but noble, fine-grained tannins and an appropriate acidity. Very long aftertaste. Great, masculine wine with lots of character! ”
Culinary recommendation
Goes well with red meat, game and mature hard cheese. Open the bottle 2 hours before consumption and serve at 18-19°C.
Vinification
Selection of grapes from old vines. Fermented in historic marble “Lagares”, traditionally stepped off foot. Slow aging in new French barriques for one year.
