About the wine

The Fattoria Vignamaggio, a noble Renaissance estate with its elegant Italian garden, is located between Greve and Panzano, surrounded by beautiful countryside and in one of the most privileged areas of the Chianti Classico zone. The estate comprises the manor house, the wine cellars and the various premises that were used for agricultural production in earlier times. It is an authentic testimony to rural life of that era. The core of the villa was built as early as the 14th century. Until the 16th century, when the estate was bought by the Gherardi family, it belonged to the Gherardinis, a noble family from Tuscany. The daughter of Anton Maria Gherardini, Monna Lisa portrayed by Leonardo da Vinci, was born here in 1479! Giorgio Vasari documents that Leonardo painted the “Gioconda” in Chianti from March 1503. An old pen pal also proves the long winemaking tradition of Vignamaggio since 1404! At the end of the 1970s, however, the winery was no longer able to live up to its original excellent reputation. In 1988, Vignamaggio was acquired by Roman lawyer Gianni Nunziante, who invested extensively and successfully in the restoration of the buildings and the garden as well as in the vineyards and ancient wine cellars. The vines, some of which were planted more than 50 years ago, consist of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo and the remaining 5% Cabernet Franc. Today, Vignamaggio is once again one of the leading producers in the Chianti Classico zone!
