Locals packed in oil and visitors in their functional jackets know that the Ardbeg distillery can be exposed to shockingly strong winds, torrential rain and eerie clouds of fog. However, these frequent weather events would be even more extreme if it wasn't for the Mull of Oa. Topographically speaking, this rounded peninsula in southern Islay protects the distillery from the harshest conditions of the mighty Atlantic. This large, projecting headland is the inspiration for Ardbeg An Oa! Like the Mull of Oa peninsula, it is remarkably round. This is not least due to the stay in Ardbeg's new “Gathering Vat.” In this barrel, whiskeys from various barrel types are brought together - including sweet Pedro Ximenez, spicy new oak and intensive ex-bourbon barrels - where they can become familiar with each other. The result is a dram with smoky power, tempered by a delicious, gentle sweetness. The characteristic Ardbeg peat, dark chocolate and anise are coated in soft, silky caramel, black pepper and cloves before increasing to an intense crescendo of flavor.
